Local Radio Service Recognized with United Way Award.
Worcester based Audio Journal, a radio reading service for individuals who are blind or otherwise challenged, was once again, honored to be a recipient of United Way’s “Inspire by Example” award. At Mechanics Hall on Tuesday, May 18th four younger broadcasters: Brian Vinik, Anna Brill, Nadine Ahrabi-Nejad, Russell Oliver and adult co-host and mentor, Melekh Shwachman, were recognized for their outstanding commitment to the blindness community and for “inspiring by example” in their dedication to the “Children’s Hour” radio program, Worcester County’s only radio program dedicated to the younger population of blind and vision-impaired residents.
Audio Journal’s mission is about providing access to the printed word. The Children’s Hour team covers a variety of reading materials to suit different age groups and tastes, allowing younger blind people access to information from the prospective of the younger population. The young broadcasters take time to prepare their programs at home, (some writing their own materials), research materials for programs and then work to make the programs interesting and lively. The have been inspired and coached by Melekh, whose encouragement never flags and who nurturing has given them an environment to succeed in and feel proud of their achievements. The “Children’s Hour” team is the ultimate example of how a group of dedicated people can improve the lives of others in the community and enrich themselves and have fun in the process.
