Audio Journal Doubles Again!
For the second consecutive year local Worcester agency for the blind Audio Journal was chosen to receive two Program of the Year awards from the International Association of Audio Information Services. Director Vince Lombardi received the honors at the recent annual conference in San Diego. The IAAIS judges programs from members throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as from Australia, Costa Rica, England, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, and South Africa. These mark the 7th and 8th such awards garnered in the last 7 years for the organization.
For the third year running, Audio Journal's "Out of Sight" program won in the Interview category, this time as an "on location" entry. Jason Rufo visited Camp Winnekeag in Ashburnham, MA and spoke with administrators, staff councilors, and campers about
this summer camp for individuals who are blind. Program host Jason, who is the Development/Outreach Coordinator at Audio Journal, and is himself blind, was joined
by Jamie Billings and Marc Bennett.
The previous two-time winner, Janet LaBreck, who is also visually impaired, is the Regional Director of the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. She now alternates producing and hosting this bi-weekly program with Mr. Rufo.
The second award was for a segment of Audio Journal programming known as "Stump the Listener." This monthly trivia contest offers listener the chance to call in and win "kind of nice" prizes.
Director Lombardi wrote and performed in this piece, along with Volunteer Coordinator Valerie Clapham, and volunteer Jack Wertheimer. A tough detective, a not-really-blind shoeshine informant and his loyal dog are featured in this noir spoof.
Recorded samples of the programs are available by contacting Audio Journal at (508)797-1117 or info@audiojournal.net.
