Popular Event to Include Art Accessibility for The Blind

Worcester - The Worcester Art Museum and Audio Journal will join to create an environment for blind individuals to appreciate the wonderful "Flora in Winter" exhibition at the museum. This Sunday, February 4, from 11AM until 4PM, blind visitors will be able to hear detailed descriptions of the exhibits, explanations by the floral designers themselves, and be led on special tours of the show.

Additionally, patrons will have the opportunity to touch, feel and smell floral elements at a "tactile table" set up in the library of the museum. This area will also feature a complete floral arrangement that blind individuals will be able to examine hands-on, and receive explanations of the elements of floral materials and design.

The Worcester Art Museum continues to strive to be accessible to all of the community and this event was so successful last year that Audio Journal asked to continue the program. Nearly 30 blind patrons, including children from the Worcester Public Schools, attended last year.

Working with the Diversity Committee at the Museum, Audio Journal converts the exhibition program to large print and Braille. It also produces an audio CD containing the program content, interviews of some of the designers, and detailed descriptions of selected pieces of art and the juxtaposed floral arrangements.

Admission to the Worcester Art Museum is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students. There is no extra charge for the accessible materials. Contact Audio Journal at 508-797-1117 or info@audiojournal.net for more information.

This program was supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Cultural Commission, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
